A:
Using Studio 3 DA and Studio INIT under System 7.0
When you launch the Studio 3 DA, you often get asked, "Is the "Studio 3" using the printer port for MIDI?" When running System 7.0, the answer to this question is not always intuitive; this has to do with the way that System 7.0 handles desk assessories. If you bring up the Studio 3 DA with no other application running, the answer to this question should be NO. If you bring up Studio 3 DA while a MIDI application is currently running, you should answer this question YES. The only exception is if the currently running application is an OMS compatible appl;ication set to "Allow non-OMS Applications" mode; then the answer should be NO. Answering incorrectly can result in chrashes and hangs. The Studio 3 INIT on this desk needs to be stored in the System folder under System 7.0 as opposed to the Extentions folder. If the Studio 3 INIT is in the extensions folder, the Studio 3 desk accessory will not be able to find and update it with your current settings. THE STUDIO 3 DA WITH THE OPCODE MIDI SYSTEM The Studio 3 desk accessory is not an OMS compatible application. If you select Studio 3 DA from the Apple menu in MultiFinder 6.0.X, it actually opens into an application called "DA Handler". It recognizes this name, and knows DA Handler is NOT a MIDI program, and it doesn't ask you "Is DA Handler using the printer port for MIDI?" In this case it is VERY IMPORTANT that you have the OMS MID Setup set to Allow Non-OMS Applications mode. You can't use Studio 3 DA and MIDI Manager or with Opcode MIDI System in OMS Application Only mode, unless you hold down the option key while selecting "Studio 3" from the Apple menu. Doing this opens the Studio 3 Da "into" the current application. This causes the DA to ask you whether the current application is using the serial ports for MIDI. Answer "yes." Generally, if your OMS MIDI Setup is in Allow non-OMS Applications mode, the correct answer to this question is NO. In OMS Applications Only or Use Apple MIDI Manager mode, the correct answer is YES if you have already started a MIDI program. If you don't follow these instructions it's likely that after you use the DA, you'll see a dialog saying that there was a MIDI transmission problem. If this happens, either open and close the OMS MIDI Setup dialog or quit and restart all applications to make MIDI communications work properly again.
