Q:
Connectors, sex-identification Elco Edac Adat AdatXT Euphonics 56 90 120 multipin connector
A:
The "516' series
Elco is manufactured in the U.S., Edac is manufactured in Canada. SIZES: 20, 38, 56, 90, 120 pins MALE/FEMALE CONNECTOR I.D.: EDAC says PLUG / RECEPTACLE, ELCO says MALE / FEMALE. All Elco/Edac connectors have two polarizing pins or sockets of different diameter. The polarizing "pins" are on the plug connector, the polarizing "sockets" are on the receptacle connector. A less reliable method of identification uses the contact pins; The plug connectors contact pins are exposed and the receptacle connectors pins are enclosed. Novices will blow it when attempting this method. ACTUATING SCREW and FIXED NUT: This is the greatest source of confusion. You can order either sex connector with an actuating screw or a fixed nut. (ADATs use a FEMALE, 56 pin, with FIXED NUT, on the unit.) CONTACT PINS: Available in: Solder Eye, Crimp and Mini-Wrap. Pins are sold separately from the connectors is bags of 100. The pin extraction tool costs about $70.00, It works with all types of pin. Crimping is the way to go for attaching the pins to the wire. FAST AND RELIABLE. The crimp tool costs about $130.00. COLORS: Connectors are available in Gray, Green, Orange, Violet and Yellow. Gray is usually the only color stocked. BACKSHELL: The backshell or cover has a cable clamp which can be rotated for either side or rear exit. ( I couldn't bring myself to write 'rear access' or 'rear entry', I get enough sick E-Mail as it is) Newark/Farnell stock a complete line of connectors. {}{}{}}{}{}{} ADATs use a FEMALE, 56 pin, with FIXED NUT, on the unit. {}{}{}{}{}{}{}{} Purchase an empty female connector, to use as a protecting cap, for the male connector on a portable snake. Attach it to the snake with a piece of wire. It will protect the exposed pins from damage as you work with the snake. The Actuating Screw is 0.250" dia., with a screw driver slot. I suggest attaching a 1.25" dia. fluted knob if you are going to cycle the connectors often. |
