Q:
How Much Ram / memory should I assign to ProTools and how do I do so?
A:
(This is for a MAC with at least 512 Megs of RAM Installed!!)
(You can decrease each assignment equally for systems with less RAM. You need to have at least 256Megs of RAM installed for ProTools to run!) Protools consists of two seperate programs. ProTools and the DAE Engine. Ram should be properly assigned to each for maximum performance. 1.Quit all programs that are running including ProTools and DAE. (When you quit ProTools it will automatically quit the DAE application for you) 2.Go into your Mac HD, then into the Digidesign folder. Now open the ProTools folder. 3.Click ONE time on the ProTools ICON to highlight it.With it highlighted , go under the File menu and choose "Get Info" and then the "Memory" sub menu that appears. 4.Here we see the minimum and perferred size fields.ALWAYS leave the Minimum size at its default size. The perferred size field can be changed to 100,000k . 5.Once you have enterd in the new value , just close the Memory Info Window. 6.Now go into the "System" Folder and into the "DAE" Folder.Get Info on the DAE ICON and then to the "Memory" sub menu.Change the Perferred size to 200,000K. Close the Memory Info Window when done. 7.Ultimately you should get as much Ram as you can afford. This will make the System run better , and allow you to use more plugins, and make more edits in ProTools. 8.Make sure you leave enough RAM for the Mac OS and the Finder!!!!!.After your biggest Protools session is running (and any others that you need to have running) , click into the Finder , and choose "About this Computer". You should have at least 20Megs of RAM for the "Largest Unused Block".
