There are many different types of filters and each one has its own unique affect on a sound. A low pass filter, for example, allows low frequencies to come through while cutting down on high frequencies. A high pass filter does just the opposite: high frequencies are left untouched while low frequencies are greatly reduced. A bandpass filter allows a range of frequencies to come through, while cutting the sonic information below or above the bandpass boundaries.
