Q:
Formatting an External SCSI Disk Drive on a MOTIF

A:
The MOTIF has a SCSI interface that can be connected to external storage devices equipped with a 50-pin SCSI connector, including hard disk drives, MO (magneto-optical) disk drives, and removable disk drives. The MOTIF will only recognize disks that are in the DOS (Disk Operating System) format. PC formatted disks (DOS) can be utilized, however, it is recommended that disks be formatted by the MOTIF itself for better results. The MOTIF uses the FAT16 (File Allocation Table) DOS file system when formatting disks with a capacity of less than 2GB. Disks with a larger capacity are formatted in the FAT32 file system.

Hard Disk Drives: The MOTIF can be used with hard disk drives of up to a maximum size of 31 GB. The 31 GB maximum capacity applies regardless of whether the drive exceeds this size. When a 31 GB disk is formatted by the MOTIF, four 7.75 GB partitions will be created automatically.

MO Disks: The Motif can be used with MO drives with capacities of 128 MB, 230 MB, and 540 MB. MO disks with a capacity of 640 MB and above cannot be used.

Removable Disk Drives: The MOTIF can be used with removable media with capacities of up to 2 GB such as Zip, Jaz, and other types of removable disk drives. Even if larger removable drives are connected, the MOTIF will only use a maximum of 2 GB. Furthermore, all removable media are formatted using the FAT16 format, and disk partitioning is not possible.

1) Press the [FILE] button to enter File mode.

2) Press the [F1] and then the [SF4] buttons to access the 'FORMAT' page.

3) Use the Data wheel to select 'all (SCSI)' in the 'Type' parameter field. When 'all (SCSI)' is selected, the 'Format' parameter becomes available.

4) Enter a name for the disk in the 'Volume Label' field. (Optional)

a) Press and continue to hold hold down the [INFORMATION] button to access the 'NAME' character list.
b) Press the [INC/YES] and [DEC/NO] buttons or turn the Data Dial to select the desired name characters from the Character List.
c) Press the [INSERTION] button to insert the desired name characters into the 'Volume Label' field.
d) Repeat steps 4.a to 4.c until the desired name has been entered.

5) Press the appropriate , , , or 'CURSOR' button(s) to select 'logical'.

NOTE: A SCSI disk drive must already be formatted in the DOS format before it can be "logically" formatted and utilized by the MOTIF. 'Logical' formatting by the MOTIF places the FAT16 or FAT32 file systems on the disk (see Answer, above), according to the actual capacity of the storage medium.

6) Press the [ENTER] button to begin formatting.
