Q:
DAE error -42 when opening a session in Pro Tools.
A:
TmfoErr (too many files open).DAE is reporting an error that's actually a limitation in the Mac OS. When PT starts up a session, it opens all the soundfiles, loads them into the session, and then closes them. If there are too many files being opened/loaded at a time, this error will occur. The limit is somewhere around 300 files. The System Accelerator (PT 3.2 and earlier) increases this limitation to a few thousand files, and the Disk I/O (PT 3.0 and later) removes the limitation. One workaround would be to bounce one or more tracks, or maybe even parts of tracks, replace the individual regions with the bounced one(s), then remove the individual regions from the session. This would reduce the total number of files in the session.
