Q:
HDT takes a very long time to launch, so long that the Mac appears to be locked up (as long as 3 minutes).
A:
The G3 Macs made available to developers prior to commercial release were equipped with Quantum Fireball 4.4 GB and 6.4 GB ATA hard drives. These systems were tested with Hard Disk ToolKit version 2.0.6 and a new version, Hard Disk ToolKit 2.5, and they functioned properly. G3 Macs available to the public are also potentially equipped with several models of Western Digital ATA drives.Western Digital WD24300 + HDT 2.0.6 + G3 = normal launch time Western Digital WD24300 + HDT 2.5 + G3 = normal launch time The problem occurs after user formats/autoinitializes the drive with HDT v 2.0.6 or v 2.5, reboots, then relaunches HDT application. FWB concludes that, with the exception of the WD34000, updating to Hard Disk ToolKit version 2.5 corrects these problems with the specified Western Digital drive models. They are continuing their investigation of the "long launch" problem with the WD34000. Hard Disk ToolKit version 2.5 will be available for purchase December 19. Upgrades for current HDT owners are $29.00. To place an upgrade order, call the FWB Upgrade Center at 800-581-4392.
