Q:
When doing start and stop recording in destructive record mode in pro tools, the same audio file is normally added onto with each record. When that file length reaches around 3 minutes, Pro Tools creates a new file in the region bin.
A:
This is a known bug and has been seen in software releases through Pro Tools 5.1 at the time of this writing. It only occurs on DRIVES larger than approximately 9 gigs. Partition size has no bearing on this bug, if the drive is larger than 9 gigs, a new file will be created with destructive record after the 3 minute file length is reached.Setting 'limit record allocation" to a smallish value in the preferences allows Pro Tools to continue creating the same file. This is only an option for those running PT 5.0 or higher. The only workaround for PT 4.3.1 and previous is to use smaller drives when destructive recording files longer than three minutes.
