On a 9600 or G3/G4 with 8.6 - 9.0.4 Zap the PRAM.You can do this by holding down Command-Option-P-R and restarting the computer. While holding these keys down the computer should restart repeatedly. Wait for the computer to restart 4 times and then take your hands off of the keys and allow the machine to boot completely.
