Q:
What is fixed in DirectConnect v5.1.1_128?
A:
The version of DirectConnect that's installed with your Pro Tools software (v5.1.1) provides a 512 sample buffer for streaming audio into Pro Tools. This newer version of DirectConnect 5.1.1_128 has a much reduced buffer size of 128 samples. The smaller buffer results in much lower audio latencies that now range well below 9 milliseconds for TDM systems and below 12 milliseconds for Pro Tools LE (at 44.1 kHz sampling rate). This means that if you play notes on your DirectConnect compatible synthesizer (such as Native Instrument's Reaktor) you will most likely no longer perceive latency. How to Install:Since DirectConnect has been installed as part of the DigiRack plug-in bundle already, you only need to swap both the existingDirectConnect and Digidesign StreamManager files with the newer version as outlined below. (You can obtain the version number by selecting the file and choosing "Get Info"from the finder's File menu.) All other components do not change. Copy the following two files to their appropriate locations, thereby overwriting existing files:- DirectConnect (5.1.1_128): Copy to System Folder > DAE Folder > Plug-Ins.- Digidesign StreamManager (5.1.1_128): Copy to System Folder > Extensions. For more information about the general operation of DirectConnect, please refer to the DirectConnect portion of your DigiRack Plug-Ins Guide.A side effect of the lower buffer size is a higher load on your host CPU. In extreme cases, you might not be able to reach the same level of performance achieved with previous versions of DirectConnect. If you experience excessive "low CPU"warnings, or even audio dropouts, we recommend going back to the shipping version of DirectConnect.Important! Do not "mix & match"different versions of DirectConnect and Digidesign StreamManager. You'll risk crashes and unforeseeable behavior. Always keep matched versions of DirectConnect and StreamManager in their appropriate folders.
