When switching the selected output from Built-in to Digidesign in Sound Manager, enabling "check signal level"on the inputpanel will result in digital noise being sent out the Digidesign hardware.

To avoid this, reboot with the Digidesign outputselected and then enable "check signal level.This is a known issue in Pro Tools 5.1.1 Mac.
