Q:
Bouncing a 16 bit file from a 16 bit session with a matching file type and sample rate appears to require a conversion choice in the bounce dialogue. Why is a conversion necessary?
A:
As of Pro Tools 5.1, all internal mixing and processing takes place in 24 bits, even when a session's bit depth is set to 16. Therefore, the bounce to disk function is always performed in 24 bits, thus requiring a conversion if a 16 bit file is the desired result.
