No, this is not required. The Fader Bank left/right buttons allow you to shift the currently displayed tracks left or right by 8 tracks (or 16, 24 etc. depending on how many units you have). There are also buttons to shift by only one track.

Of course, it is nicer to view more tracks at once, but you can access all tracks and all plug-in parameters with the main unit only.
