Background processing creates Analysis files that are needed when any Pure DSP functions are called. When you perform any Pitch Shifting or Time Compression the Analysis Files lets Digital Performer perform theses functions much more efficiently.

In the Background Processing window there is a Preferences button. You can tell Digital Performer to wait until Background Processing is needed. You can still play audio after it has first been recorded even though Digital Performer is Analyzing the Audio.
