MOTU Issue: Sample Accurate synchronization with a PC

Currently, you can only achieve Sample Acccurate Sync on a PC with the ASIO 2 PCI-324 Driver and any host application that supports ASIO 2, such as the latest version of Cubase VST. The current Wave driver specification does not support Sample accurate Sync. If you are using Software which supports Wave drivers or the ASIO 1.0 specification you will be able to achieve phase accurate synchronization.

Both "Phase Accurate" and "Sample Accurate" sync will give you tight synchronization, but sample accurate sync will give you a higher degree of accuracy. For phase accurate Sync, the Wave Driver or ASIO driver will derive Word Clock from the sync Adat port but you will need to send MTC or LTC(SMPTE) to the host application for address. With a BRC or a Digital Timepiece you would need a MIDI interface to get the LTC or MTC from the BRC to the computer. The program would then get Word Clock from the Adat Sync port and Address through the MIDI connection. An MTPAV could also take the place of the BRC and act as the master synchronizer if you want MMC control from the computer.

Phase accurate sync takes place when synchronizing to an external MTC or LTC source, and DAWs (Digtial Audio Workstations) locate and synchronize to the nearest sample location. Since the source clock and word rate are matched, audio drift will not occur. Sample-accurate sync cannot take place since the sync source cannot send a sample resolution. The tightest resolution from LTC or MTC is quarter-frame accuracy. Using the MTP AV or DTP with a LTC or MTC timebase will phase-lock devices.

Sample Accurate sync refers to the ability for machines to locate and synchronize to exact sample locations. Digital Performer supports several hardware configurations where sample-to-sample accuracy is possible. 1) ADAT with Korg 1212, 2) ADAT with 2408, 3) ADAT, MTP AV with 2408, 4) ADAT, Digital Timepiece with 2408 and 5) DA-38, DA-88, Digital Timepiece with 2408. Since DP can sync to sample address via the ADAT port or Control Track port (DTP only), you can now achieve full sample-to-sample accuracy when synchronizing.

With the latest ASIO 2 PCI-324 driver you can also get Sample accurate Sync with the 2408 and any host application which supports ASIO 2, such as Cubase VST.
