Q:
How do I get a multi-timbral setup going on my MotifRack?

A:
All you need to do is go into multi mode and call up a multi-timbral setup from the multi-library, or navigate to one of the higher numbered multi's, say 127, it is already setup for 16 part multi-timbral sequencing. You can also go through and assign the receive channels for any part within any multi patch. Here is a brief description of the multi-library and how it is setup.

The MULTI Library this is where the 124 preset Multis are located. They are divided into 2 banks: Perf Bank (59) and Multi Bank (65). The difference between a PERF Bank MULTI and a MULTI Bank MULTI is how the MIDI Receive Channels are set. Programs in the PERFORMANCE bank are intended to be played in real time from a keyboard – up to four PARTS are assigned to MIDI channel 1 and the other PARTS are set to (MIDI Receive) OFF. This is equivalent to a Motif/S90 Performance mode program. Programs in the Multi bank are designed to work with an external sequencer and are equivalent to a Motif/S90 MIX. However, many of the Multi bank setups combine the Performance and Mix concepts. They are set so you can play up to 4 PARTS assigned to the basic receive channel, while the sequencer plays the other 12 Parts on different MIDI channels. A Multi is designed to do this combination function, as well. So you can recall a PERF bank Multi from the LIBRARY and activate the other 12 PARTS on whatever MIDI channels you need – allowing you to play a huge Performance along with your sequence. Likewise, you can recall a MULTI bank Multi and set a Part(s) to a single MIDI channel for real-time play. Think of the MULTI LIBRARY as a backup of the factory MULTI data – meaning that you can overwrite the USER MULTI data without fear.

* Performance Bank (59) – has up to 4 Parts on the same Basic MIDI Receive channel and PARTS 5-16 are set to MIDI RECEIVE CHANNEL OFF

* Multi Bank (65) – has some programs with 16 Parts that default to RECEIVE Channels 1~16 - one per channel. It also contains some “Performance-type” setups combined with active PARTS.

* You navigate to the MULTI LIBRARY by holding [SHIFT]+[MULTI] = [LIBRARY]

* Use the BANK LEFT/RIGHT buttons to toggle between the PERF bank [<] and the MULTI bank [>]. And use the UP/DOWN cursor and/or the Data Wheel to select a program
