Q:
My JL Cooper CS-32 USB does not work with Windows 98se / ME. What can I do?
A:
First, check to see if the virtual MIDI port is showing up in Windows. Go to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Sounds and Multimedia (* Multimedia in Win98se) - Audio and see if JLCooper CS-32 shows as a MIDI device. If so, the problem likely lies in the software.
If it does not show up, close Sounds and Audio Device Properties and go to System - Device Manager. Make sure these devices show up under: * Ports (COM & LPT): USB Serial Port (COM1) (or COM2, COM3, COM4) * Sound, Video, and Game Controllers: JLCooper CS-32 * Universal Serial Bus Controllers: USB High-Speed Serial Converter It is possible under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers that you have a USB Device with a yellow exclamation point under it. If so, double-click this device and hit Reinstall Driver. Choose Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and hit Next. Choose the location as c:\program files\JL Cooper\CS32 and hit Next. This should complete the hardware installation. Now check your MIDI ports above for the JLCooper CS-32. If you have neither an unknown device nor the CS-32 under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, you'll want to go back to Control Panel and Add New Hardware, choose manual installation, Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, Have Disk, and point it to the file c:\program files\JL Cooper\CS32\CS32.inf. Reboot, and perform the check at the top of this article.
