No incoming digital signal when connecting an AKAI MPC series sampler to the digital SPDIF inputs on the Mbox.

This is a known issue with the AKAI MPC series samplers. A possible workaround is to either route the MPC's digital outputs through another digital device before going into the Mbox or resort to using the analog outputs on the AKAI.
