Q:
I have a Delta Series card with an onboard Midi port. If I play a Midi file, I don't hear anything. What can I do about this?
A:
The Midi playback is routed through the Midi Output port of your Delta Series card. As for the Delta 1010, the Midi Output port is located on the front panel of the Breakout-Box. As for the Delta Audiphile 2496 and Delta 1010 LT, the Midi Output port can be found on the Breakout-Cable that is to be connected directly to the audio card.
Delta Series cards do not have an Onboard Synthesizer chip. This means that they don't have a component, that creates any instrument sounds like piano, drums, trumpets etc. You either need to use Windows 2000/XP, which come with a virtual Sythesizer (Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth) that can be used to make Midi audible on the Delta's Audio Outputs. The software program Winamp includes the same virtual Synthesizer, even for Windows 98SE/ME. Start Winamp and configure the Input-Midi-Plugin at Options->Plug-ins->Input->Winamp2 MIDI Plugin->Configure->Device: midiout / Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth. Software programs like Cubase VST or Logic Audio Platinum have a VSTi-Plugin Interface. Using this interface, these software programs can load Virtual Instrument Plugins (e.g. Native Instruments B4, Dynamo, Reaktor, Battery etc.) that can be played like a real Synthesizer from within the application. Yamaha offers an XG Software Synth, Roland offers their Virtual Sound Canvas. Through these software synthesizer applications, MIDI can be transformed into sound and played back through the Delta's Audio Outputs - these Software Synthesizers can alternatively be used as VST-Instruments as well.
