Q:
What are some of the top issues I need to know before using the GPO?
A:
GPO is simple to use, but can be very involved because it runs on Mac and PC, and as a DX/VST/AU/RTAS plug-in in a variety of host applications, and runs together with notation programs. No other sample package works with this many programs. Because each system is unique and each program is different, there can be some bumps along the way. Here we identify some of the main issues and try to offer some solutions:
•RAM - The first thing to check is to make sure you have enough RAM. • MOD WHEEL VOLUME - The Mod Wheel controls volume, so if you don't hear sound make sure you move it up to an audible level. •SOUNDCARD SETTINGS - Soundcards vary and often are the source of some problems. ...· Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card since the latest drivers for your cards may contain fixes. ...· Make sure sound card set at 44.1khz and 16 bit. A different setting would conflict and may cause glitches. ...· If using GPO Studio or a VST host, make sure the card is set for ASIO drivers. ...· Adjust the buffers in your soundcard settings. Setting the buffers can significantly improve performance. ......... · USER SOLUTION submitted by Jack Gray "I initially had troubles loading a full complement of instruments. I also had huge "VST CPU" spikes, long load times...Then one magical day, I tried changing the locked sample rate on my MIA MIDI card from 96000 Hz to 41000 Hz. All of the above issues immediately vanished. Memory usage and load times were halved. Ambience now runs at 100% with no problems. I assume this meant that the samples were being converted at load time, and so were consuming twice the memory and twice the load time. Another item: I learned that increasing the audio buffer sizes on my card aided greatly in eliminating the VST performance spikes that were causing audio dropouts. If I need low latency (i.e. for MIDI input), then I decrease these buffer sizes accordingly. • DISABLE AUTO CONVERT TO 32BIT - Make sure Auto-convert Samples to 32bit is not checked otherwise this will double the file size. • REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON A MAC - Many of the installation problems on Macs have to do with permissions. You should always rebuilt permissions after "every" install of any software to be safe. To repair permissions: applications/utilities/disk utility. Always run this and do it religiously, • INSTALL GPO ON THE DEFAULT DRIVE - Sometimes issues arise where it is being installed. To be safe it is recommended that GPO be installed on the default location which is usually the boot drive. IT may be easiest to do an "Easy Install" or install all listed components.
