Duende is a Spanish word which has a number of meanings. Depending on context, Duende could be defined as a spirit, as magic, or as an inspiration. But perhaps Goethe summed it up best. When speaking of the musical abilities of violinist and composer Nicolo Paganini he described Duende as "something that everyone can recognize, but no philosopher can explain." Good music is always recognizable, but not always easy to explain.
