Q:
Should I use a Smart Card for My MotifES8

A:

Not unless you already own one. As a replacement for SmartMedia cards most people are saving their data to USB Flash drives. A Flash Drive sometimes called a Thumb drive (because it is about the size of your thumb) is the storage method of choice for Motif ES owners.

A USB drive (you can see several sizes in the MotifMart - click the link at the top of the page and go under Accessories) can be both economical and convenient. (You can use USB drives of much larger sizes as well).

It works exactly like the SmartMedia card in operation and yet will hold several times more for equal or less money.
SmartMedia cards, when we first started using them in 1998 were an unknown to musicians - however we needed something to replace the floppy disk which was rapidly disappearing. The original Motif (2001) was totally committed to the SmartMedia card (and the much more expensive SCSI storage media)... the Motif ES (2003) only included a SmartMedia card slot to accommodate the many original Motif owners who had all their data on the card format... but the Motif ES introduced the ability to use any type of USB storage device (short of a CD burner, it can read USB CDROMs however).

SmartMedia cards were for a brief few years were supported by many digital cameras (a business much larger than electronic musicians) the problem is the whole musical community is not big enough for computer industry types to pay much attention to us at all. We simply are not a big enough customer base to command much "special" attention (that is no one is going to build any specific media just for musicians).
