Q:
MaxMSP/Jitter crashes after updating Java on XP, o installing Vista. How can I fix this?

A:
It has come to our attention that there is a problem with the way that the latest Java is configured on Windows XP and Vista that causes MaxMSP to crash when the JVM is loaded. Luckily, the fix is pretty simple:

Go into C:/Program Files/MaxMSP 4.6/Cycling '74/java/
Open the file "max.java.config.txt"using a text editor such as Word Pad.
Find the line that says "max.jvm.option -Xms16m"
Change this to "max.jvm.option -Xms64m"
Save and close the file.

Once you've done this you will be safe to install the most recent version of Java without crashing MaxMSP. The next version of MaxMSP will have this set as the default.
