Q:
Contact Cleaners Deoxit CaiLube
More info on Caig cleaners and lubricants
A:
In reference to an old Tech Tip we posted way back in 1998 (see inSync 6/26/98) about care and feeding of faders, our friends at Caig Laboratories have kindly supplied more detailed information that should better clarify the differences between their two products we mentioned. Please note DeoxIT D5 is a deoxidizing solution that cleans, preserves, and lubricates metal connections and contacts. It dissolves oxides and sulfides, leaving a thin (organic) layer that coats and protects, preventing the dissolved contaminants from re-attaching. CaiLube MCL is a precision lubricant specifically formulated to improve conductivity and lubricate conductive plastic and carbon compound faders, switches and other similar components. Over time these components lose their original lubrication from wear and/or repeated cleaning. Dust, dirt, drink spills and other contamination also degrade the components' lubricant. The need for re-lubrication is necessary to avoid excess wear and abrasion to the plastic surfaces.Caig's products are formulated to be used sparingly. Only a small amount is needed. The thin protective seal remaining on the contacts does not leave the contact vulnerable to airborne contaminants. Nor, is the product conductive. The products are available in 100% solution and a 5% solution. The 5% solution contains a solvent that can be utilized as a flushing agent to help rinse away contaminants. Once the solvent evaporates, you are left with a thin coating of the 100% solution.Caig also has quite a bit of useful information at their site about how to use their various products.
