____________ ______________ _____ ______ Notes _____ * Product no longer being produced by Apple. 1 Third-party 1MB SIMMs which have only two 1MBx4 memory chips soldered on the SIMM PCB are incompatible with these computers. These computers continue to support 1MB SIMMs with eight 1MBx1 DRAM chips soldered on the SIMM PCB. All Apple labeled upgrade kits provide compatible SIMMs for all CPU systems. These two 1MBx4 1MB SIMMs may be found, however, in Apple Finished Goods System bundles of the Macintosh SE/30, Macintosh IIci, IIsi, LC and Quadra 950. 2 The Macintosh Classic has 1MB of RAM soldered to the main logic board. Additional RAM can be added using an expansion card. Apple's Macintosh Classic 1MB Memory Expansion Card has 1MB of additional RAM and two SIMM connectors. 3 These systems have 32-bit-clean ROMs. Computers with 32-bit-clean ROMs can take advantage of more than 8MB of physical RAM under System 7. 4 The ROMs in these systems are not 32-bit clean, but with the 32-Bit System Enabler for System 7.1, or the appropriate version of MODE32 from Connectix Corp. for other versions of System 7, they can run in 32-bit mode and can take advantage of more than 8MB of physical RAM. 5 The Macintosh II and Macintosh IIx require special 4MB SIMMs. Be sure to specify your Macintosh model when ordering these SIMMs and ensure that the vendor is aware of the difference. The Macintosh II requires the Macintosh II FDHD Upgrade to use 4MB SIMMs. NOTE: This upgrade is no longer available. 6 To take advantage of more than 8MB of physical RAM, the Macintosh II must have a PMMU installed, so that the 32-Bit System Enabler (or MODE32 with versions of System 7 prior to 7.1) can expand the system's memory map. 7 The Macintosh II won't start up if you install 4MB SIMMs in bank A. You'll hear musical chimes at startup, indicating a hardware failure. Install 4MB SIMMs in bank B, and use 256K or 1MB SIMMs in bank A. 8 These systems can address a maximum of 10MB of RAM. When the SIMM slots are filled with 4MB SIMMs, the lower 2MB of DRAM on the logic board can't be addressed. Please note that the original LC II came in two configurations. For more information on configurations and limitations, search on "Macintosh LC II and RAM". 9 The Macintosh IIfx requires 64-pin SIMMs. 10 Only the eight chip 16MBx1 SIMMs have been tested on the Macintosh IIvi and Macintosh IIvx. 11 These systems use 32-bit wide, 72-pin SIMMs (fast-paged mode) not previously used in Macintosh computers. 12 The Centris 650, and Quadra 800 use "memory interleaving" which occurs when SIMM pairs are used (for example: two 8MB SIMMs). This allows the memory subsystem to perform certain operations faster. Basically, it allows the memory subsystem to write to the same memory address in different banks of memory before incrementing the address. Depending on how memory intensive the application, this can improve performance 5 to 10%. 13 The Centris/Quadra 610, Centris/Quadra 650, and Quadra 800 have flexible memory systems, meaning that any supported SIMM size can go into any SIMM socket in any order, and they can run with partially populated banks. They don't support 1MB, 2MB, or 64MB 72-pin SIMMs. 14 The Macintosh LC III and Performa 450 are functionally similar and have the same RAM specifications. 15 The Macintosh LC 475, Performa 475/476 and Quadra 605 are functionally similar and have the same RAM specifications. 16 SIMMs must be installed in pairs of the same size. 17 The Macintosh 630 family includes the Macintosh LC 630, Quadra 630, and the Performa 630, 635, 636, 637, and 638. 18 The 580 logic board has two SIMM slots. The inside slot can accommodate only a single-sided SIMM in 1, 4, or 16MB sizes. The outside slot can accept a double-sided SIMM in 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32 MB sizes. 19 There are several differences between the memory configurations and usage on the Power Macintosh 7200, 7500, 8500, and 9500 series and other Power Macintosh computers, including: - 8-byte, 168 pin DIMMs (Dual Inline Memory Modules), which is a new industry standard memory module, are used rather than SIMMs. SIMMs are not compatible with the Power Macintosh 7200, 7500, 8500, and 9500 series computers. - The Power Macintosh 9500 is designed to expand to a DRAM capacity of up to 1.5 GB using 128 MB DIMMs. However, these DIMMs are not currently available and have not been tested for use with Power Macintosh 9500 series computers. - No memory is soldered on the logic board of the Power Macintosh 7200, 7500, 8500, and 9500 series computers. At least one RAM DIMM must be present for the computers to operate. A minimum of 8 MB is required. - DIMMs can be installed one or more at a time. The Power Macintosh 7500, 8500, and 9500 series computers also support memory interleaving when DIMMs are installed in pairs and in paired slots. The Power Macintosh 7200 series computers do not support memory interleaving and can be installed one DIMM at a time. 20 The following computers are in the Macintosh 5200 series: Power Macintosh 5200/75 LC, Macintosh Performa 5200CD, and Macintosh Performa 5215CD. 21 The following computers are in the Macintosh Performa 6200 series: Performa 6200, Performa 6216, Performa 6218, Performa 6220, and Performa 6230. 22 The Macintosh LC 630 DOS Compatible ships with 4 MB soldered on the logic board, 4 MB in one of the two SIMM slots on the logic board, and 4 MB in the single SIMM slot of the DOS Card. |
