The connectors to be used are 15-pin "mini-D" style as used in IBM-PC VGA interconnect. The KDS output connector is a receptacle, the KDS input connector is a plug.

KDS pins 4 and 14 are not connected. KDS pins 6-10 must be connected to Chassis Ground via the shortest, lowest impedance path possilbe. It is assumed that Logic Ground has a low-impedance connection to Chassis Ground at some point(s) in the system. The mounting clips for the KDS connectors must also be connected to Chassis Ground via the shortest, lowest-impedance path possible.

Note: The standard KDS cable uses only one KDS connector ground pin. KDS pin 6 is used for the shield drain wire ground on both ends of the cable. The other goround pins 7-10 are not used with this cable, but must be connected to ground on both ends. To reduce crosstalk, a cable that uses individually shielded pairs can be used. Ground ins 6,7,8 and 10 are used to connect the four shields to ground on both ends and pin 9 is connected on both ends with a larger-gauge wire. This wire is used to reduce ground potential difference between the transmitter and receiver chassis, reducing common-mode voltage at the receiver.

The standard KDS interface cables are fabricated with "four-pair" low capacitance cable, Belden 9806 or equivalent, consisting of four unshielded twisted pairs with a overall braid shield. The connectors are wrapped 360 degrees with copper foil connected to the cable shield and connector shell at each end. The cable length must not exceed 15 meters. Kurzweil offers these cables in both 3 and 15 meter lengths.
