Q:
What is the word length used in the calculations for processing audio files in Pro Tools?
A:
For all host-based mixing and processing operations (i.e., AudioSuite and PowerMix), we use 32-bit floating point. For TDM mixing and processing operations, data is managed @ 24-bit, except when actually doing calculations, during which time a 48-bit accumulator is used. Once processing of an individual sample is complete, the 24 least-significant bits are truncated, and the 24 most-significant bits are used.
