Q:
What are the 16-bit Optimized Mixer and 24-bit Optimized Mixer Plug-Ins?
A:
With the release of Pro Tools 4.1, two mixer Plug-Ins were supplied for TDM systems. This allows the user to choose more headroom/fewer mixer channels per DSP chip, or less headroom/more channels per DSP chip, depending on their needs. On a Pro Tools III PCI or PT|24 system:The 16-bit Mixer allows up to 36x2 per DSP, and has 18dB headroomThe 24-bit Mixer allows up to 26x2 per DSP, and has 30dB headroomTo use a different Mixer, the user need to manually move them between the "Plug-Ins" and "Plug-Ins (Unused)" folders before launching Pro Tools. The one that's in the "Plug-Ins" folder when Pro Tools is launched will be the active Mixer (the active Mixer is also displayed in the Session Setup window within Pro Tools).
