Q:
When should I low level format my drive?
A:
The majority of drive problems have to do with high level directory problems or incorrect settings rather than low level formatting issues. Conditions at the factory were optimal for low level formatting and cannot be reproduced at home. In the event that power is lost during a low level format, the drive could become permanently damaged. If there are bad sectors on your SCSI drive, do what you must to restore data (Norton's etc.) then promptly backup your sessions and look into purchasing a new drive. A low level format will not reliably fix your drive.
