Q:
Why does summing occur when bouncing to disk in Pro Tools sometimes and not others.

A:
When a hardware playback engine is selected in Pro Tools (Mix 32 voice, Mix 64 voice, d24, AMIII, etc.) summing will occur on bounce to disk. With playback engine set to DAE Powermix in Pro Tools 4.3.1 and earlier, no summing will occur in a bounce to disk.Pro Tools Powermix, session with one track panned center, and fader set to 0 dB. Using AS Gain, find that the peak of a selected audio file (lets say that it is -4.0 dB). Bounce this file to disk with mono and no scaling selected. Import the bounce into the session and find the files peak with AS Gain. It will be identical at -4.0dB.Now perform the same test in PT 4.3.1 or 5.0 with a hardware playback engine selected. The peak of the bounced file will be roughly 3.5dB hotter than the original signal due to summing.
