Q:
The -6010 error with a Audio Media III orDigidesign 001 While quitting Pro Tools or trying navigate around the desktop or third party sound applications
A:
Unlike some other drivers, the AMIII driver can only be used by one application at a time. The -6010 error dialog is the symptom of two or more applications trying to access the AMIII at the same time. These "applications" could be Pro Tools LE, Win98 itself, or any of the many audio applications out there (Sound Forge, Cubase, etc.). In order to play/record audio or open the WaveDriver Settings Dialog, no other application may be accessing the AMIII.Note that some audio applications such as PT LE, Acid, and Cubase VST have an option to keep the driver "open" all the time even when you are not playing or recording. In PT LE, this preference is called "Active in Background" and may be found in the Operations menu. In Acid, go to Options | Preferences and select th Audio tab. The name of the preference there is "Keep audio devices open for faster playback startup reponse". If you have this preference set in PT LE/Acid/Cubase, you must completely exit from it before you can open the WaveDriver Settings dialog or play/record from another application. If you often encounter "Error -6010: Cannot Acquire Hardware" errors, and "Digidesign AMIII: Chan 1-2" is chosen as your preferred playback and/or recording device in the Multimedia control panel (Audio tab), turning off system sounds may fix the problem. To turn off system sounds, go to the Sounds control panel and select "No Sounds" as your sound scheme. Press OK to save your settings and restart Windows 98. Alternatively, you may play system sounds through another soundcard on your system. To do this, make sure your other soundcard is chosen as your preferred playback and recording device in the Multimedia control panel. Restart Windows 98 and select system sounds to be played through this soundcard from the Sounds control panel.
