Q:
AM III causes Compaq Presario to crash on boot
A:
One user found the AM III card to conflict with the Ethernet card and the USB bus on the Compaq Presario motherboard. (The modem and display did not seem to cause any conflict). One workaround is to create a separate hardware profile for an "audio setup" and disable the Ethernet and USB drivers for that profile. (You would need to be careful not to use the WAV driver for the default sound card, though. Because this driver can't be disabled for certain hardware profiles, booting to a profile with the Ethernet and USB enabled would cause the computer to crash at the first sound.)A more permanent solution is to get the AM III to use another IRQ altogether. Unfortunately, the Compaq Presario BIOS doesn't allow any configuring of IRQs for PCI cards. However by disabling the IRQ tables for IRQ steering, it is possible to get the Compaq to put the AM III card on its own IRQ. After the IRQ that AM III uses is changed, the WAV driver needs to be reinstalled.
