Q:
How do I sync my Tascam DA-88, MTP AV, and Pro Tools LE?

A:
Sync: DA-88 to the Digi 001 via an MTP AVConnections:1) Connect the MTP AV's Word Clock OUT (BNCport) to the Word Clock sync IN port of DA-88. 2) Connect the SMPTE OUT (RS-422 cable) of DA-88 to SMPTE IN On MTP AV. Note: This might require the addition of the Tascam SY-88 card, check Tascam manual. 3) Connect an optical cable out the DA-88's Converter box (T-DIF > Lightpipe) into the 001 PCI card Optical Input on the back of the computer. This will require a Tascam IF-TAD Lightpipe Digital Format Converter (T-DIF > Lightpipe). Note: Optical Out of the 001 PCI card has a red light emanating from it. 4) Ensure the essential serial/USB connection from the MTP AV is going to the Computer. On the MTP AV1) MTP AV clock must be set to internal.2) Word clock out must be set to 1x.3) The MTP AV's MMC ID must match Pro Tools (#127)FreeMIDI/OMS Studio Setup1) Install OMS first2) Install FreeMIDI, Clockworks, & the MTP Express Console (motu.com). Launch FreeMIDI and tell it to "use OMS" (or go to the preferences and select "OMS"). 3) Launch OMS and make sure it recognizes the MTP AV as an interface. (Follow Page 10-12 in Getting Started Guide for OMS setup he) Branching off the MTP AV, create a device and set the correct manufacturer and model (Tascam and DA-88).5) Choose port 9 for the connection from the MTP AV to the DA-88. 6) In OMS > Edit Menu > Uncheck all four preferences > OK. 7) In OMS > File Menu > Save, make current, and quit OMSPro Tools1) Setups Menu > Peripherals: - Synchronization: Generic MTC reader, Port is MTP AV,mdm-Machine Control: Enable and send to the MTP AV,mdm ID# 1272) Windows Menu > Show Session Setup: - Set the sample and frame rates to match the DA-88.- Current time and session start time should match hours. - Set the Sync Mode to Optical.- Note: If you do not see "current time" then the timing information is not being sent from the MTP AV (check MIDI connections, FreeMIDI/OMS setup, Pro Tools setting or the MTP AV). When changing session start times you must press the enter key to complete the change in hour. If, when switching sync mode from internal to optical, you get the error "unable to detect a clock source" then the optical cable is at fault or Pro Tools is not receiving the optical sync (Go to setups: Playback engine: and make sure that Optical format is on ADAT). If it prompts you to adjust the regions choose "Maintain Relative" position.3) MIDI Menu: Input devices. Ensure that the DA-88 and/or the MTP AV is checked.4) Transport Window: Put online (Operations menu: Online). The clock will flash blue.5) Setups Menu: Preferences > Operations. Choose either record at ADAT lock or Insertion/selection. ALSO, in the Operations tab > Open Ended Record Allocation > Limit to 60 Minutes. 6) Drop the cursor (with the Selector Tool) at a location in Pro Tools and press play on the transport window. Pro Tools should go into play mode and begin playback of the DA-88. -or-7) Set (in the transport window) transport=MMC. The transport will now drive the DA-88.
