Q:
In pull down mode, does the sample rate of Pro Tools actually get pulled down if there is not a USD (or other clock device that supports pull down such as an MTP AV) connected as the clock master?

A:
No. Although the Pro Tools software will allow you to select pull down, the sample rate will not actually change unless a USD or SSD is connected to the system. Pro Tools does make a change to the timeline as well as to the sample clock when pull down is selected. The change to the timeline is to rearrange where the frame grid and seconds are when compared to your sample display because now you're playing back fewer samples per second of real time. The change will also take place if there is another device such as a Midi Time Piece AV connected as clock master. In this case, pull down must be manually selected from that devices front panel.
