Pro Audio Support

Q:
When I press play in Pro Tools my QuickTime movie is immediately out of sync with my audio. Pulldown is engaged.

A:
In Pro Tools 5.1 through 5.3, with pulldown engaged, film speed audio plays back out of sync with the QuickTime (QT) movie. Audio that is at film speed should play back in sync with QuickTime video when pulldown is engaged. This is a known issue in Pro Tools 5.1 through 5.3 It is fixed in subsequent versions.WORKAROUND - With Digitranslator, export the session to an OMF and sample rate convert the audio. If at 48k, set source to 47592 and destination to 48000. If at 44.1k, set source to 44056 and destination to 44100. This way, Pro Tools will read the files at the correct session sample rate, but they will playback slower ("pulled down") and be placed later in the timeline without having to engage pull down in the session. Open the resulting OMF in Pro Tools (if using Digitranslator 1.x you must convert back to a Pro Tools session). The new session should play in sync with a QuickTime movie at video speed.Another workaround is to re-digitize the audio in Pro Tools while set to pull up, then disengage pull up and the audio will then play slower (i.e. pulled down) and should sync with a QuickTime movie at video speed. Do all post work that way, and then use pull-up to bring the audio back up to film speed when outputting the audio. Also, remember the the "Pull-up" and "Pulldown" settings in the Pro Tools Session Setup window refer to sample rate, and ARE ONLY VALID WHEN A SYNC I/O, USD, OR A VSD IS CONFIGURED in the system. Engaging pull-up and pulldown without having one of these sync boxes connected only changes the ruler location in the Edit Window, but DOES NOT actually pull up or down the sample rate. Finally, please realize that there is another issue in Pro Tools 5.0-5.01, which has the same characteristics, but is an altogether different problem. In those versions of Pro Tools, when pulldown is engaged, the QuickTime movie is also slowed down in speed. Both problems are solved in versions of Pro Tools subsequent to 5.3.
