Q:
MOTU Issue: Non-MOTU USB Interfaces and OMS

A:
Many non-MOTU USB interfaces like the MIDIMan MIDISport and Opcode MIDIport32 ship with only OMS USB drivers. This prevents you from using them directly in FreeMIDI. However, with the latest FreeMIDI 1.4, you can configure the interface in OMS, and use the OMS Setup in FreeMIDI applications like Digital Performer, Performer and Unisyn. FreeMIDI 1.4 can be downloaded from MOTU's download page. Please refer to the following directions or the USB .pdf file linked at the bottom of this record for detailed instructions on setting up USB interfaces and using the OMS Setup file with DP.

While these instructions are specific to the MIDISport and MIDIport32, it is possible that other USB interfaces with OMS Drivers will work in the configuration outlined below.

What you need

1. OMS 2.3.7 or higher. This can be downloaded from Opcode’s website at www.opcode.com
2. The MIDISport or MIDIport32 USB drivers which ship with the interface

3. FreeMIDI 1.4 or higher. This can be downloaded from MOTU’s website at www.motu.com

Getting Started

First, install the software and drivers listed above. Be sure OMS is installed before installing FreeMIDI.

Configuring OMS

1. Launch OMS Setup

2. From the Studio menu, open MIDI Cards and Interfaces...

3. Click onto the Search button (since a USB interface is neither a modem nor printer device, it is not necessary to check these ports when searching)

4. Complete your OMS Setup by adding MIDI devices as usual

Setting up FreeMIDI

Since your MOTU application runs under OMS, it is not necessary to create a FreeMIDI Configuration. Simply setup FreeMIDI to use OMS. To do so:

1. Launch FreeMIDI Setup

2. From the File menu, open the FreeMIDI Preferences... window

3. In the Software Compatibility section, choose “Use OMS when available”

4. OK and Quit FreeMIDI Setup

The OMS Setup in Digital Performer

Once the setup is complete, the configuration will publish OMS Devices and Patchlists to your FreeMIDI application. For example, the OMS Setup file will appear in the Devices column of Digital Performer:
