Pro Audio Support

Q:
Why does my HHB CD recorder / burner have a warning that if I use common high-speed media it may damage the recorder and void the warranty? What's the detailed explanation?

A:
High-speed off-the-shelf media is optimized for computer CDR drives, which are also optimized for burning at high speed. This requires the laser to output a much higher temperature to change the dye on the CDR. Burners like the HHB CD recorders and other brands burn at 1x (real-time) but still require the higher temperatures for the high-speed media, again because of the way the high-speed CDRs are formulated. This is done during the laser power calibration phase of the burn, and this higher power output of the laser can drastically shorten its life, which was not intended to output this kind of power. This is why HHB and other companies which make real-time audio CD recorders are warning against buying this high-speed media intended for drives which support it.
