Q:
Intermittent playback and record issues in Pro Tools LE - specifically laptops running WinXP. Some symptoms include: Pro Tools is only able to intermittently play or record at low buffer setting such as 128 or 256, but at 512 or 1024 will not drop into play or record at all. Also seeing -6086 error - CPU held off interrupts for too long at the lower buffer settings. This can happen with 1 track or several tracks with or without plug-ins.

In one case, after exhausting all other options, setting the Windows Optimization's options from the back of the Getting Started Guide back to their defaults cleared up this issue. To do this:
Right click on "My Computer" icon and click on "Properties" Click on the "Advanced" tab and under "Performance" section, click the "Settings" button. Select "Advanced" tab. Make sure Programs is selected for both the "Processor Scheduling" AND "Memory Usage" sections
