Q:
I turned the Mic Level knob up three quarters of the way and it’s clipping. Should it be doing that?
A:
When we designed the mic preamps, we had two choices - either we could make it so that no mic could clip the input, which would mean that some mics that don’t have a very high output would have trouble providing enough signal, or we could provide enough gain that low level mics could be boosted enough to be useable, which would mean that hotter mics would clip. So, if you’re using a mic with a fairly hot output signal, you’ll be able to make the input clip, but if you’re using a mic that sounds great but doesn’t have that much “oomph”, we’ve still got you covered.
