When I try ripping a loop phrase from an audio CD, a "PROTECT" warning is displayed and I cannot rip.

You cannot do this when the project is protected. For example, the demo song was protected originally, so this cannot be done on the demo song. Please cancel the "PROTECT" function by referring to "Protecting a project" (p.169) of the operation manual.
