Most consumer soundcards just support a 16 bit output instead of the usual 24 bit for professional usage.
In version 6 (or greater) go to Options >System/Audio dialog (Shortcut "y") and select "Device Resolution/Driver Communication 16 Bit."
In version 5.9x and older versions you can find a similar menu entry in the options or preferences menu.
