Try to repair your installation of Windows:

1. Locate your Windows XP CD and insert it in your CD drive.
2. Boot from the CD. If your computer is not configured to do this automatically, you may need to tap F8 while the computer is booting up.
3. When the CD loads, you will be presented with several options. DO NOT press "R" to repair Windows using the Recovery Console. Instead, press "Enter" to load more options.
4. When the next set of options is loaded, press "R" for a repair installation.

During a repair installation, all of your Windows system files are rewritten. Anything you have installed or saved should remain unaffected. If the repair installation does not help, then you will probably have to reinstall Windows.
