Q:
How do I split one long track on an Alesis Masterlink into smaller segments or songs so I can fit them onto CD's?
A:
The Masterlink is fully capable of recording lengthy stereo recordings. The Masterlink will allow up to 50 hours of stereo recording at 16-bit, 44Khz.
Things get sticky when it finally comes to burning a red book CD of your recording. The 4 hour length of Beethoven’s Fifth does not allow it to be burned on just 1 CD. So, you’ll need to split your recording into several audio files and place each of those onto separate playlists. Ok, let’s make our first split. • Go to PLAYLIST EDIT. • Find the location in the recording you wish to create a split by playing the track and using the scan buttons to fast forward to that location. • When you get to the desired split location, hit PAUSE. • While holding PLAYLIST EDIT, hit TRACK START. This will set the split point. A quick way to check the TRACK START point is to press TRACK START and playback should occur from the desired split point. • Now, while holding PLAYLIST EDIT, press the TRACK START. Press the UP/YES button to confirm or cancel the split. • Repeat this process until your recording of Beethoven’s Fifth is split into individual sections that can fit on a CD. These individual sections are now separate audio files that reside on your hard drive. • You can now add each of the split audio files to separate playlists to burn. Accessing audio files on your hard drive OK, let’s make it clear the difference between tracks and files. Tracks in a playlist are simply references to files on the hard drive. So, if you decide to delete a track from a playlist, you will not delete the audio file from the hard drive. Alright, let’s take a look at how you access the actual audio files to place them on a playlist or delete them. To access ALL the audio files contained on your hard drive… • Choose a playlist • Press the PLAYLIST EDIT button • Pressing the right SKIP button will first run you through the tracks on your playlist then, will run you through ALL the audio files on your hard drive. As you select each audio file, you can play it back, name it, delete it, move it or copy it. Adding Audio files to a playlist • Press the PLAYLIST SELECT button • Use the UP and DWON buttons to find an empty playlist • Press PLAYLIST EDIT • Press TRACK MOVE • Use the right SKIP to “skip” through your audio files. • Once you find an audio file you wish to add to the playlist, press TRACK MOVE. In the example below, you are moving an audio file to Track 1. You can now burn CDs of your split audio files.
