Q:
Why does the Mbox 2 have a control panel in Mac OS 10.4.2 and what is the checkbox for AC-3 Digital Passthrough all about?
A:
Mbox 2 has a control panel that shows up in Mac system prefs. You can see the version of firmware, change the clock source between internal and S/PDIF and you can enable the other new feature, AC-3 Digital Passthrough.
This option lets you enable AC-3 mode. When enabled, the Mbox2 S/PDIF output switches to a 24-bit clean passthrough mode for AC-3 or DTS encoded audio from a DVD or other media player application (Mbox 2 analog output is muted whenever AC-3 mode is enabled).
