When I adjust the level knob on the A Designs ATTY, I hear noise comming from the unit, why?

In one case, this was due to phantom power being sent to the unit. The ATTY is a passive attenuator and does not need power. Turning off the +48v, Phantom power to the ATTY reolved this problem.
