Q:
Configuring FreeMIDI with a MOTU MIDI interface to use with Finale, Allegro and PrintMusic.

A:
FreeMIDI is a driver or helper application that allows your computer to speak to your MIDI interface. The following instructions are for a USB Mac and a FreeMIDI-compatible interface, such as the FastLane or the Keyspan adapter (which allows people to use serial interfaces with USB Macs).

The newest version of FreeMIDI is either on your Finale CD or available for free download from Mark of the Unicorn. Coda recommends you check the MOTU website prior to installing FreeMIDI from your Finale CD. If a more current version of FreeMIDI is on the website, download that and install it instead (Coda is currently shipping 1.45).

To configure FreeMIDI:

1. Open the FreeMIDI Applications folder on your Hard Drive and double-click "FreeMIDI Setup".
2. Go to FreeMIDI's Configuration Menu and choose "Quick Setup".
3. Click Continue.
4. If your MIDI interface does not show up in the "Current Configuration" column in the next window, read the instructions that came with your interface or contact the manufacturer for assisitance. MOTU can be reached at (617)576-3066.
5. If your MIDI interface does show up in the Current Configuration column, choose the Manufacturer and Model of your keyboard (if you have more than one device, choose the device connected to In/Out A on the MOTU interface) under New Device. Studio Location should read "FastLane", or "MTPAV", etc..., and if the device is connected to In/Out A, choose Cable 1. For In/Out B, choose Cable 2.
6. Click the Add button. Your device will appear in the Current Configuration column (either by name, or just called "Device 1").
7. Add any other devices you might have connected, and click the Done button.
8. With your new Configuration open, you should see a picture of your interface (in this example, the FastLane) and your device(s), with arrows to and from the appropriate port (A or B).
9. Go to the File Menu and save the setup. The QUIT FreeMIDI.

10. Launch Finale, and choose MIDI Setup from the MIDI menu.
11. In the MIDI Setup window, change MIDI System to "FreeMIDI".
12. Set Input Device and Output Device for Channel 1-16 to the desired keyboard.
13. Click OK to close the Midi Setup. Now Finale is configured to use your MOTU MIDI interface.
