3 things need to be in place before you can actually hear your EXS sample -

1) you must have a sampler pulled up on an audioINSTRUMENT track and not a simple AUDIO track..
2) you must have the track with the sampler you are using highlighted in the Arrange page - If not your sampler will not receive the midi triggers to play
3) you must have the volume fader up
