When you import a still image, it becomes a clip that's approximately two minutes of identical video frames, with a default duration of 10 seconds between the In and Out points. If you like, you can change the duration in the General tab of the Preferences window. For more information, see Setting general preferences.

Once edited into a sequence, still images need to be rendered unless you are using a real-time system. For more information, see Rendering.
