Q:
Audio that is spotted to VITC (with a paused VTR) is off by 2 frames when using a SMPTE Slave Driver (SSD).
 
A:
The SMPTE Slave Driver is designed to support Linear Time Code (LTC). Vertical Integrated Timce Code (VITC) produces repeated frames and is not supported by the SSD. The offset problem is created when the SSD processes LTC in 2 frame chunks to determine the Clock speed. (It needs to sample at least two SMPTE frames to in order to predict a clock speed)The workaround would be to have LTC from the VTR Time or Audio Code Track drive the SSD, and have VITC converted to LTC which would feed a standard MIDI Interface (like a Studio 3). Muting one or the other would then allow play sync (via the SSD), and spotting (via the MIDI Interface).
