Q:
Overviews are computed after recording (not during recording) on Pro Tools Project systems.
A:
Computing overviews is done by DAE during recording except in the case of the project deck. The DSP on the Project deck does not have DMA (Direct Memory Access), so overview calculations while recording does not happen on Pro Tools Project. The Audiomedia II and Audiomedia III cards have DMA so they can record overviews during record. In the case of Pro Tools III we use what are called helper dsp's on the DSP Farm card which has DMA. So overviews for Pro Tools III get their data from the helper dsp on the DSP Farm. For the Project deck, Pro Tools has to compute the overviews on the host (after recording is stopped).
